Trommel Screen

Rotary Screening Drum Design

The trommel screen uses a rotating cylindrical drum to classify mixed solid waste by particle size. With customized screen openings, stable rotation and continuous material turning, it is suitable for front-end screening, fine removal and size classification in waste sorting lines.

Applicable waste raw materials

1. Municipal solid waste and aged refuse

Screens mixed household waste, landfill mining material and aged refuse to remove fines, soil-like material and small impurities before further sorting.

2. Construction and decoration waste

Separates sand, soil, small aggregates and fine fractions from mixed C&D waste, helping downstream air separation, ballistic separation and manual sorting work more efficiently.

3. Biomass, compost and RDF pretreatment

Used for primary screening, impurity control and material size stabilization before crushing, air separation or fuel preparation.

Working principle

The motor drives the reducer and drum body to rotate at a stable speed. After materials enter the drum, they are lifted and dropped repeatedly by the rotating screen surface. Fine particles smaller than the screen aperture pass through the mesh, while larger materials move gradually toward the discharge end, completing continuous size classification.

FAQ

What materials is the trommel screen suitable for?

It is suitable for municipal solid waste, aged refuse, construction and decoration waste, compost, biomass, RDF pretreatment material and other mixed solid waste that needs particle-size classification.

Can the screen aperture be customized?

Yes. The screen aperture can be selected according to the target fraction, such as fine removal, oversize separation or multi-stage classification. Replaceable screen plates can also be configured for different materials.

How does it reduce clogging during operation?

The rotating drum continuously lifts, turns and drops material, which helps loosen mixed waste and improves contact with the screen surface. For wet or sticky materials, anti-clogging structures and cleaning devices can be added according to the project.

Can it be used with other sorting machines?

Yes. A trommel screen is commonly installed before ballistic separators, air separators, magnetic separators, manual sorting stations and shredders to stabilize material size and improve downstream sorting efficiency.

What information is needed for equipment selection?

Please provide material type, moisture, maximum feed size, target screened fraction, capacity requirement and site layout. The drum size, screen aperture, motor power, feeding and discharge arrangement can then be designed for your line.
